What’s in a name?
AQUAVIT
Akvavit, also known as aquavit or akevitt, is a Scandinavian distilled beverage of typically about 40% alcohol by volume. Its name comes from aqua vitae, the Latin for "water of life".
Akvavit, like vodka, is distilled from either potato or grain. It is flavoured with herbs such as caraway seeds, anise, dill, fennel, coriander, and grains of paradise.
International News
White & Mackay eyeing Glen Moray
White & Mackay, the Scotch brand bought by Vijay Mallya for GBP595 million last year, is reportedly interested in acquiring Glen Moray from LVMH. Glen Moray is an Elgin based single-malt that is being sold by LVMH as part of its restructuring of its Glenmorangie whisky business.
Ketel One deal goes through
Diageo recently completed a $900 million deal with the owners and distillers of Ketel One Vodka, The Nolet Group. They will come together to form a 50/50 company which will own the global rights to market, distribute and sell super premium Ketel One Vodka and Ketel One Citroen. The new company will be based in the Netherlands.
InBev trying to take over Anhueser-Busch
The world’s biggest beer brewer Inbev is sticking to its $46.4 billion takeover bid for Anheuser-Busch. The Leuven, Belgium-based Inbev’s unsolicited offer of $65 a share to shareholders of the St. Louis-based brewer Anheuser-Busch was rejected, prompting speculation of a hostile takeover bid. The Beer Wars continue.
Glen Grant gets a makeover
Italian drinks company Campari has re-launched Glen Grant whisky in an attempt to boost flagging sales. Glen Grant, the worlds 3rd largest blended scotch whisky according to Campari, also plans to increase production so as to fuel sales in International markets.
Stolichnaya to come under the hammer soon
SPI, the owners of Stolichnaya, have reportedly hired Lehman brothers in preparation for an auction, confirming speculations pertaining to the sale of one of the best known brands of Vodka. Stoli could be valued at as high as $3bn and Fortune Brands and Bacardi are regarded as key bidders in this battle.
Constellation Brands sell eight wine properties
Constellation Brands has sold eight of their wine properties to wineries from California, Washington and Ohio for US $209m. CEO Rob Sands was quoted saying this sale will help in “ streamlining Constellations US wine portfolio by eliminating duplication and excess production capacity”.
Diageo all set to build new distillery
Diageo is ready to build its new distillery in the Virgin Islands to produce its Captain Morgan Brand. The facility plans to supply bulk rum to the US market with a capacity of approximately 20 million gallons.

Reveilo wines top BT ratings
Business Today magazine rated Reveilo wines’ Chenin Blanc 2007 as the best among whites and the Syrah Reserve 2005 the best red wine at the very first BT More Indian Wine Ratings 2008.
UB Group’s latest creations
UB Group recently developed and patented a colourless whisky and a diet whisky which does not affect one’s cholesterol level. The company is in talks with the European Union to have a separate classification for the new spirits.
Diet Cobra comes to India
The Indian subsidiary of Cobra beer is planning to launch its Diet Beer in September this year. They aim at selling 50,000 cases in the initial year.
Radico Khaitan distillery in Maharashtra
The producers of 8 PM whisky and also the 2nd. largest spirit producer in India are looking at setting up a distillery valued at Rs.135 crores in Aurangabad within the next couple of months. The distillery will reduce transport and logistics costs and will roll out all the existing brands of Radico.
Germany’s best now in India
Germany’s best vodka brand and the third strongest spirit brand, which is also among the top 15 in the world, Wodka Gorbatschow was launched in India on 9th June’08. It is a joint venture between Allied Blenders and Distillers Pvt. Ltd. (ABD) and the brand’s owner Henkell & Sohnlein Sektkellereien KG Wiesbaden, Germany.
Colourless Breezer
Bacardi Martini recently launched Bacardi Breezer Clear Lemon, the first colourless Breezer to have been launched in India. Clear Lemon is available in a 250ml bottle and is priced at Rs. 45/-
