Bombay Sapphire
Bombay Sapphire is a brand of gin distributed by Bacardi, launched in 1987, having been named via a competitive process whereby a number of leading Madison Avenue agencies were played off against each other. The name hints at the origins of the gin's popularity in the India of the days of the British Raj. Bombay Sapphire is marketed in a flat-sided, sapphire-coloured bottle that bears a likeness of Queen Victoria on the label.
Constellation Europe launches Chilean wines
Wine giant Constellation Europe is now targeting the mainstream Chilean category with the launch of two new Chilean varietals under the Echo Falls brand umbrella - the Echo Falls Sauvignon Blanc and the Echo Falls Shiraz. These wines have been launched specifically to appeal to young, "newbie" customers and are priced at GBP5.49 each.
2009 World Whiskies awards announced
Cooley Distillery managed to grab a record six awards including "World's Best Irish Single Malt Whiskey" and "World's Best Single Grain Whisky" at the World Whiskies Awards in London. More than 150 whiskies from around the world were entered into the awards, and all entries have to survive three rounds of tasting to win the coveted title of "Best in the World".
Glenfiddich rolls out 'Distillery Edition' whisky
Glenfiddich recently launched a 15 year old 'Distillery Edition' single malt in a handful of selected markets worldwide. Deep, golden barley colour, this non chill-filtered malt is bottled at 51% ABV and is matured in American and European oak casks including Oloroso sherry casks.

International Spirits Challenge announces winners
The gold, silver, bronze and commended winners have been named in the liqueurs and specialties, gin and genever, vodka, tequila and mezcal and other white spirits categories. Big winners include Martin Miller’s gin, Tanqueray No 10, Merlet Crème de Cassis, Russian Premium vodka and Wyborowa Lemon. The medal winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in October and the next round of Cognac, Armagnac, Brandy, Rum, Cachaça and other cane spirits will be announced in early July in Drinks International.
Glengoyne rolls out 40 year old single malt
Ian Macleod Distillers is offering its oldest, most valuable Highland Single Malt, the Glengoyne 40 Year Old. The premium quality single malt whiskey is subtle yet complex, with delicate flavours. This malt comes in a hand-blown, numbered Glencairn Crystal decanter, which is adorned with an etching of the Scottish distillery. The decanter is presented in a lacquered, piano-finished, solid oak wood box that has gold plates on the front and hand-stitched cream leather interior. Only 250 decanters will be available, priced around £3000.
Bacardi expands RTD portfolio
Bacardi has expanded its RTD line up by introducing the Bacardi Classic Cocktail Raspberry Mojito in the US recently. This new raspberry offering comes in a ready–to-serve package and is made with Bacardi Rum, natural lime and mint flavors and an extra burst of ripened raspberries.
Coke debut's PlantBottle
Coca-Cola has become the latest firm to step up its interest in the field of bioplastics, with the unveiling last week of plastic bottles made partially from plants. Dubbed the PlantBottle, the plastic bottle is made from a blend of petroleum-based materials and 30 per cent plant-based materials sourced from sugar cane and molasses. Unlike PET bottles which are made entirely from petroleum, this innovation is more eco-friendly. Coke plans to pilot the new bottle with Dasani and sparkling brands later this year in select markets.
JV between Cobra and Molson Coors
Molson Coors and Cobra have formed a joint venture, to be called Cobra Beer Partnership Ltd., to own, produce and market the Cobra beer brand. Molson will own 50.1% and Karan Bilimoria, Cobra’s former owner will retain 49.9% of the company. The JV will help marry Molson Coors' brewing and marketing expertise with Cobra Beer's brand equity and strong presence in ethnic restaurants.

Resolute Vodka to be launched in India
Sipping Spirits, a Goa based company, has tied up with Resolute International Marketing, an arm of the Netherlands-based Melchers Group, to launch Resolute Vodka in India. The company is in final rounds of negotiation with a Singapore-based distiller to export Resolute Vodka, bottled in India. The company plans to launch seven-times distilled and five-times filtered Resolute in three different colours — Black (which would be the first black vodka in the country), Crystal and Pink with a price tag of Rs 600-Rs 750 per bottle.
Beer hard to come by in AP
The tussle between top beer companies and the Andhra Pradesh Beverages Corporation Limited (APBCL) over the issue of price revision has hit the supply of beer to the state. APBCL refused to lift beer stocks from UB and SABMiller as they had approached the Andhra High Court to intervene and get them better prices for beer. This has resulted in sales crashing to 12 lakh cases a month from the usual summer month average of 30-32 Lakh cases.
UB – Heineken deal all set
The merger of Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), makers of Tiger beer, with the Vijay Mallya-led United Breweries (UB) is now all clear. UB had been insisting that Heineken, owners of 42% in APB and 37.5% in UB, should not run parallel operations while being large shareholders in UB and that APB's operations be merged with UB. APB ended its JV with CK Jaipuria clearing the way for the peace pipe to be smoked by UB and Heineken.
White Mischief & Romanov in Top 5 fastest growing vodkas
According to The Spirits Business, a UK based research house, White Mischief and Romanov were the 4th and 5th fastest growing vodka brands in the world in 2008, outselling brands like Russian Standard, Sobeiski, Nemiroff, Absolut, Stolichnaya and Gorbatschow. The rise in regular and mid-priced vodka sales has coincided with sales and marketing efforts spreading to non-metros.
Diageo to start bottling in TN
The TN govt. has granted approval to a bottling pact between Diageo and SNJ Distilleries. The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation, which controls the liquor trade, has also approved the trademark registration of 2 Diageo brands : Smirnoff vodka and Gilbey's brandy, thereby making Diageo the first liquor multinational that will list its brands in TN retail as well as manufacture in the state. Smirnoff is expected to be available in stores later this year.
Imported Liquor prices to go up by 20-25% in Delhi
The Delhi excise department has revised local taxes on imported liquor upwards. Imported wines and spirits will now be taxed at 30%, as opposed to the earlier flat fee of Rs.300 per bottle for spirits and Rs. 150 per bottle for imported wines. The move is expected to impact sales of imported liquor severely.
