Allied Takeover Update

Allied Domecq PLC shareholders have voted to accept a 10.7 billion euro ($13 billion) takeover proposal from French rival Pernod Ricard SA, paving the way for one of the world's biggest deals in the spirits sector. Allied Domecq Chairman Gerry Robinson told shareholders that recent difficulties in many markets highlighted the need for such consolidation. "In these increasingly challenging market conditions, your board considers that the need for further consolidation in the distilled spirits industry has become increasingly apparent," he said.



What's in a name? - Marie Brizard and Roger

On 28th June 1714, Marie Brizard, the 3rd of 15 children of Pierre Brizard and Jeanne Laborde was born in Bordeaux. In 1755 Marie Brizard saved the life of Thomas, a West Indian sailor who gave her the only treasure he possessed : the secret of what was to become Marie Brizard Anisette. Marie Brizard then joined hands with her nephew, Jean-Baptiste Roger to found the company Marie Brizard & Roger.

Radico plans to enter economy segment
Radico Khaitan plans to enter the economic liquor segment by acquiring distilleries in South India, which accounts for 60% of the market for economy liquor brands. The company has earmarked an investment of Rs.85 crore for the current financial year to acquire bottling units in the south and enhance its existing spirit producing capacities.

Radico has recently launched gin under the brand name of Magic Moments and also plans to launch a vodka.
 
UB group to launch country liquor
UB is all set to enter the Rs 20,000-crore country liquor market and is believed to have registered several labels in Maharashtra as the first step to the brand launch.

Som to export Hunter to Middle East
Som Distilleries and Breweries plans to export its Hunter beer to the Middle East by next month. The Rs 25-crore company has already secured the license for marketing the beer in Dubai.
 
SAB Miller to invest big in India
SABMiller has announced that it will invest more than $125-million in India's booming beer market over the next five years. SAB aims to increase its share of the Indian market from 10% to 25%. India has been identified as a strategic growth market for SAB.
 
Venky's Hatcheries to enter wine market
The wine division of Bala Entertainment, a Venky's Hatcheries group company is called Venky's Rock. The company has entered into a joint venture with South Australian wine maker Boar's Rock. In collaboration with the company, it plans to market a range of wines from the McLaren Vale region of Australia. Bulk wine will be imported, bottled and marketed in India.

V&S will pay Angostura $121.8 million for its 67.8% stake in Cruzan rum. Cruzan is one of the fastest growing rum brands in the US.

SABMiller is buying South America's No. 2 brewer Bavaria SA in a $7.8 billion deal! Last year Belgium's Interbrew bought Brazil's Ambev. Bavaria's major brands are Aguila, Cristal and Pilsner.

The brand's logo, designed to embody elit's luxurious essence, is comprised of fire (representing the distillation process), and ice (signifying the freeze filtration process).
Pernod to sell Seagram's Vodka
Pernod Ricard is to sell its Seagram's vodka brand in the US to privately held Young's Holding Inc.This is widely thought to have been prompted by Pernod Ricard's purchase of Allied Domecq which will see Pernod acquire Stolichnaya.

Anheuser Busch launches energy beer in the UK
Anheuser-Busch's (A-B) new "energy" beer, Be, has already become a target for the national press. The beer contains caffeine, guarana and ginseng. Some papers have suggested that it may lead to binge drinking.

Smirnoff is launching a new global advertising campaign this month. The promotional push is intended to intrigue consumers with colourful facts and provocative symbols of its heritage and quality. This campaign is designed to enlighten consumers in an engaging way about the Smirnoff brand's roots and to reinforce the vodka-making expertise that is 'Clearly Smirnoff.'
Bacardi pushing for 35mls in the UK
Bacardi-Brown-Forman has called on the spirits industry to pull together and support its 35ml initiative. The campaign, called "wise-up and size-up", encourages licensees to transfer Optics from 25ml to 35ml serves.

The board, composed of six people who are not employed full time by Allied Domecq, reviews the company's advertising before it is released. The fact that Allied Domecq submits its marketing to a review board shows how far some in the business are willing to go to pre-empt regulation and avoid consumer backlash."

Italian label manufacturer Modulgraf has just announced its latest venture : the talking wine label. According to Daniele Barontini, president of the design company, the new technology is geared towards luxury wines and wine aficionados. 'The label will retain its square or rectangular shape, design and colour. It will be made of plastic and can actually be removed and 'read' like a CD. The producer's voice will explain the merits of the wine, give particulars of the vintage, and talk about the estate,'
