Allied Takeover Update
Edrington Group (owners of Famous Grouse) and Remy Martin, 2 of the major
shareholders in Maxxium have blocked the entry of Teacher's Whisky,
Laphroaig Single Malt and Courvoisier Cognac into the Maxxium alliance.
Fortune Brands who acquired these brands from Allied Domecq is the other

What's in a name? - Cutty Sark |
CUTTY SARK Scots Whisky was created on 20th March 1923 when the partners of
wine & spirit merchants Berry Bros. discussed the launch of a new whisky.
The partners had invited James McBey, a well known Scottish artist to a
luncheon that day to discuss the launch. It was he who suggested the name.
Cutty sark is 18th-century Scots for "short shirt". Strangely enough it's a
nickname of a fictional character invented by Robert Burns, the poet. From
there, Cutty Sark was borrowed for a number of products, most famously a
tea clipper and from the clipper to the Scotch Whisky we know and love.

Fuel launched |
After a long teaser campaign, Seagram India finally launched Fuel, their
new mid-market segment vodka. Priced at Rs. 270/- in Gurgaon (where we
picked up a bottle), it bridges the gap between the regular segment vodkas
such as Romanov and White Mischief and premium vodkas such as Smirnoff. The
bottle is futuristically shaped like a rocket about to take off. The glass
and printing quality however leave something to be desired. Interesting to
see if Fuel cannibalises sales of Fling!

Beer mat which refills itself! - A beer mat that calls for a refill when
the pint is almost empty has been invented by scientists in Germany.
Beneath the cardboard surface is a small, flat baseplate which conceals
pressure and acceleration sensors that react to the weight of the glass and
the position and movement of the coasters. The microsensors then pass on
this information via radio link to the bar, where the signal is picked up
and decoded by a waiting computer.
