What's in a name? - Captain Morgan

Captain Morgan rum is named after Captain Henry Morgan, the 17th century privateer. Henry Morgan began producing rum on the island of Jamaica in 1680. In 1944, the Seagram Company started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company. Captain Morgan is now produced by The Diageo Corporation.

Launches/Events
Diageo launches Sharktooth, a vodka bridging the regular and premium segments, priced @ around Rs. 280/-, Diageo also stirs up the dark spirits market with the launch of Haig, bottled in India and priced to compete with the Signature's and Blender's Prides of the world. Interesting times ahead.

Smirnoff Experience around the corner with Paul Digweed performing @ gigs around the country.

Dewar's Scotch officially launches in the country with the global brand ambassador, Stephen Marshall making pit stops in Mumbai and Delhi. Likely to be an explosion of launches over the next few months, along with the much awaited Seagram's wines, from their mint fresh vineyard in Nashik.

Smirnoff also launches a new variant in their Twist portfolio - Green Apple Twist.

Angostura Rum (launched by CL World Brands) has just launched in India, Angostura has launched a 12 year old sipping rum priced @ Rs. 6,500/-!. Fortunately they also have some younger variants!

Bartenders hit the big time as Pranav Thakker (Taj President) and Shawn D'Souza (Cidade de Goa) are off for the international finals of the Bacardi Martini Grand Prix in Pessione, Italy in 2007. Arshad Khan (Taj Palace) won the Marie Brizard Dream Date Cocktail Competition and is off for a week long International bartending conference and cocktail competition in Bordeaux in December 2006. Except more bonanzas for bartenders in 2007 as liquor companies pull out all stops to build relationships with the front line.

Indage divests stake to US private equity firm
Along with announcing scorching quarterly results, Champagne Indage has divested a 6.9% stake to US private equity firm Emerging Markets Management.

SABMiller launches Peroni Nastro Azzuro in India
SABMiller launches Peroni NA in Mumbai. Nastro Azzuro literally means Blue Riband and this is a premium beer from the SABMiller stable. Needless to say, with beer import duties high as ever, SAB is more focused on building the brand slowly and steadily until duties take a drop.

Sultania Trade launches Italian wines from the Veneto region - Cantina di Soave
The range includes two traditional whites namely Soave D.O.C. and Soave Classico D.O.C. and three reds, Bardolino D.O.C., and Valpolicella D.O.C. and Valpolicella Superiore D.O.C. The end consumer price (E.C.P.) would be ranging from Rs.940.00 to Rs.1100.00 per bottle of 75 cl.

United Spirits ties up with Russian Standard vodka
United Spirits is expected to start importing Russian Standard vodka into India, while at the same time exporting a few of their brands to Russia. Russian Standard vodka is one of the new kids on the block with exploding sales and founded by a new age entrepreneur - Roustom Tariko. Mr. Tariko has also filed a law suit in the US over the authenticity of Stolichnaya vodka. Pernod labelled the accusations 'grossly misleading'.

Sanjay Menon to launch his own wine
Sanjay Menon the owner of Sonarys is believed to be looking for land in Maharashtra to set up his own winery. It was also rumoured sometime back that Sanjay was setting up a vineyard in Chile and he had a set of rather attractive wine makers :) Sanjay has also taken on the responsibility of launching Bahula, a domestic wine from Nashik region.

Thai Beverages buys Inver House Distillers
Thai Beverages, has bought Pacific Spirits UK, the owner of Scotch whisky producer Inver House Distillers.

Casino Royale spells big time for Smirnoff and Heineken
Bond is back with Smirnoff Martinis in Casino Royale and Heineken is also launching a global ad campaign using Eva Green (who plays Vesper Lynd).

Bacardi to acquire New Zealand vodka maker
In a big move, Bacardi has acquired 42 Below, the trendy New Zealand based vodka company - with a range of exciting brands including a range of 42 Below brands, including four flavored vodkas - Manuka Honey, Kiwifruit, Feijoa and Passionfruit - and the newly developed products of South Gin, Stil Vodka, Seven Tiki White Rum, Tahiti Dark Rum and 420 spring water.

Foster's may change its name
Foster's group, the Australian beer and wine company, may drop the word Foster's from its name as the company focuses on the premium beverages segment.

Brown Forman acquires Herradura Tequila
Brown-Forman is acquiring the Mexican tequila company - Grupo Industrial Herradura, which has the brands Herradura and El Jimador tequilas as well as New Mix - a tequila based ready to drink (RTD).

Diageo launching red-coloured Guinness
Diageo is planning to test launch a red-coloured version of Guinness.
