Ghetto is said to be one of the happening night spots in South Bombay. It is on Bhulabhai Desai Road and difficult to find. We’d suggest you call up and get directions.
We almost did not make it as only couples are let in after 7.00 pm on weekends. Fortunately, our lady crew member who was not sure if she would come landed up and in we went – a happy couple comprising three men and a woman. Ghetto scores on effect. The walls are painted in some dark colour with patches of flouroscent paint, and the contrast is rather good. There is a lot of pre-written graffiti on the walls and some spontaneous work as well. The interiors are supposed to approximate an inner city in the US (the designers of this place may never have visited Dharavi) and may possibly do so (we’ve never been to an inner city in the US). The DJ is in an alcove and churns out some very deadly stuff. He accepts requests. Earlier models used to serve at the bar here, but not on the day we reached there. There is a pool table, but that is not operational on weekends.
There are two types of cocktails –standard and exotic.Standard includes stuff like Bloody Mary , Planters’ Punch, Screwdriver, etc. and exotic has stuff like Margarita . The Bloody Mary was good as was the Planters’ Punch, but the Margarita had too much of the hard stuff. One of us had to end up drinking most of these three concoctions- this is the individual who falls asleep at the wheel- and the drive back was very interesting. But on the whole the liquor scene here is very decent. Free peanuts happen on enquiry.
To sum up, Ghetto is one of the best places we’ve been to in B’bay. The crowd is as hep as it can get in the city (and that is very hep), the booze is decent and the music is great. Head for it, but don’t forget to carry cash-these guys don’t believe in plastic.
