Rambagh Palace

Now I know what all the fuss is about. The last time I visited the Rambagh Palace was in the day, and it was impressive, but there’s very little to compare to it at night time, because, in the night lit up, inside and outside, it’s simply magnificent.

There’s tight security and the guards at the gate want to know where I’m going and frisk my backpack. My intent was to head for the Polo Bar, but I was sidetracked at what looked like and was, a long train, drawn up in the lawns of the Rambagh Palace. I headed for Steam, the railway carriage, which doubles up as a lounge bar cum restaurant – the platform is the lounge bar!

Steam looks like Rambagh’s concession to the younger generation, showing that even a heritage property can swing. The swing left something to be desired though, the rap music was early 90’s and the large screen was showing wrestling action…

I checked out the cocktail menu, and asked for their Signature cocktail, which was called the Steampolitan, a heady mixture of vodka, melon liqueur and pineapple juice, served in a Martini glass.

The bartender apolgized for the lack of Midori, and that he had to use the De Kuyper melon liqueur as a substitute. Used as I am to take the rough with the smooth, I sank back into my chair, sipped my Cocktail and watched the wrestling, thinking about what I might drink at the Polo Bar, but that’s another review…
